Windows 10 support expires, millions of computers at risk
Microsoft’s support for Windows 10 expires next year. This means that millions of computers will be vulnerable to security holes and cyber threats. First released in 2015, Windows 10 is still actively used by many people.
But when extended support ends, devices will no longer receive security packages or feature updates. This will leave PCs vulnerable to viruses, malware and other cyberattacks.
Microsoft advises users to upgrade to Windows 11 or “buy a new device that can run Windows 11”. But Windows 11’s minimum system requirements prevent many older PCs from upgrading.
In particular, the requirement for a TPM 2.0 security chip is keeping some still-usable systems on Windows 10. So for PCs nearing the end of their lifecycle, an upgrade or replacement may be a sensible option.
According to Microsoft, devices that do not support Windows 11 will become obsolete due to software that is not updated. This shows that it can create unnecessary electronic waste. With official support ending in October 2025, it is possible to say that millions of Windows 10 devices will be wasted.
